Los Angeles Lakers executive Jeanie Buss is elated with the Memphis Grizzlies deal that resulted in the Lakers acquiring 7-foot Pau Gasol. What she’s even more elated about is the fact that before the deal happened, no leaks got out – leaks that could have killed the deal with the Memphis Grizzlies. “What I'm most proud about that trade is the fact that it never leaked out,'' said Buss, daughter of owner Jerry Buss, to Bloomberg News. The deal, which saw Gasol exchanged for Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittenton, and two future first-round picks caught most everyone off-guard, including all the general managers in the league that would have worked to scuttle the deal. As further reported: Had word of the proposed trade leaked, it probably wouldn't have been completed, said Buss, the team's executive vice president of business operations. “I have a feeling that there would have been teams in the league that would have upped their offer to get Gasol or they would have locked the Memphis GM in a closet to keep him from making that deal,'' Buss said during an interview with Bloomberg's "On the Ball'' radio program, which airs this weekend. The deal has been widely seen as being almost exclusively in favor of the Lakers, who many now see as being the favorite to win the Western Conference, and be favored to win the NBA Championship. Some in the front office executive and coaches see the need for the NBA to create oversight on deals to prevent them from being radically skewed in favor of one franchise by creating a “trade committee.†Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, looking at having to deal with a Gasol/Bryant threat, understandably agrees. The trade between the Grizzlies and Lakers ‘is beyond comprehension.'' OTHER NEWS FROM THE BUSINESS OF SPORTS NETWORK
