Keno Davis was voted the AP college basketball coach of the year on Friday, receiving 29 of the 72 votes from a national media panel. Wisconsin’s Bo Ryan received 14 votes, while Tennessee’s Bruce Pearl, Memphis’ John Calipari and Purdue’s Matt Painter each received five votes. As reported by The AP, “I remember seeing this trophy when my father won it and thinking that except for championships there couldn’t be anything better to win,†Davis said. Davis, the son of former Drake coach Tom, led the Bulldogs to a school-record 28-5 record, including a 21-game winning streak, also a school record. Tom won the award with Iowa in 1987, making Keno and Tom the first father and son to win the national coach of the year award. Under Keno Davis, the Drake Bulldogs won the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season and tournament titles this season, after finishing 17-15 last year. This year’s Drake team earned its first national ranking since 1975, and first NCAA tournament bid since 1971. The No. 5 seed Bulldogs were ousted from the tournament in a 101-99 overtime buzzer-beating loss to Western Kentucky in the first round.
