Lebron James says that his future for the Cleveland Cavaliers will probably not be decided until after the 2009-10 season according to NBA.com.
The most James has said about his future is when he introduced to the world his newest shoe, the Nike Air Max LeBron VII, in his hometown of Akron, Ohio.
James could still sign an extension at the highest salary allowed of up to three years. This is as long as he signs before June 30, 2010. He can also pick up an option on his present contract that can extend his deal through the 2010-11 season worth $17.1 million, which is roughly $1.5 million more than what he will make next season.
Though the reigning NBA MVP has these lucrative options, it’s pretty clear that he does not want to sign an extension anytime soon, thus making him a free agent next summer.
James has said that he is pleased with his situation in Cleveland and the work general manager Danny Ferry and owner Dan Gilbert has done in the offseason to put a better team around him.
James also went on to say that he is humbled to play with “one of the greatest basketball players to ever play the game,” that of course being 4-time NBA Champion Shaquille O’Neal.
Despite James saying that his future with the Cavilers will not be a distraction for next season, there will continue to be rumors going around of who he will be suiting up for in 2010. In fact, there have already been indications from the middle of last season that he could eventually play for the New York Knicks or the New Jersey Nets.
Both the Knicks and Nets are a part of ESPN.com Chad Ford list of teams that will be significantly under the cap for next season. The other teams are Miami Heat, Los Angeles Clippers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Chicago Bulls, Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets and Sacramento Kings.
If “The King” does not sign the extension, the before mentioned teams and a slew of big-spending teams looking to win quickly might be a part of the “LeBron Sweepstakes” in the summer of 2010.
