Ron Artest Plans to Interview Brawl Instigator PDF Print E-mail
Written by Nick Kappel

Ron Artest

Sacramento Kings’ forward Ron Artest has recently created his own personal segment on KHTK, a local radio station in Sacramento. He calls it “Radio Ron-Ron”, and uses this platform to discuss any and all hot topics.

He tested his interview skills with Kings’ center Spencer Hawes last week, and is scheduled to interview ESPN’s Marc Stein next week. After that, he plans to interview John Green – the Detroit fan who threw a cup of beer at Artest during the “Malice at the Palace” brawl in 2004. As reported by the Sacramento Bee:

Apparently, Green has already been tracked down and appears to be on board with the plan. No date has been set, but the buzz grew enough that Fox’s Best Damn Sports Show caught wind of it and wanted Artest to do the interview in their LA studio.

Instead, Artest plans to conduct the interview at his house, which could prompt Best Damn Sports Show to send a video crew to capture what figures to be a highly anticipated event.

Artest announced his intentions during the interview with Hawes, and even went as far as asking Hawes what he would do if he was hit with a beer while standing on the free throw line.

The quick-witted Hawes responded by saying, “I probably wouldn’t go into the stands to go after them. That probably wouldn’t be what I’d do. That’d be a tough one.”

Portland City Council to Pass Resolution Urging Bill Schonley Be Given Curt Gowdy Award PDF Print E-mail
Written by Maury Brown
Wednesday, 28 May 2008 04:51

Bill SchonelyThe Portland City Council will hear a resolution on Wednesday, May 28 urging the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame to honor Bill Schonely with the Curt Gowdy Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the game of basketball during his nearly 30 years as the voice of the Portland Trail Blazers.

Mr. Schonely and other Trail Blazers alumni will be in attendance in celebration of a career that spanned 2,522 Trail Blazers basketball games, which measured in real time amounts to 6 years, 332 days that Mr. Schonely spent courtside as the link between the Trail Blazers and their fans.

“Coining the term ‘ Rip City ’ is certainly something that most people identify with Mr. Schonely,” said Commissioner Randy Leonard, “But my favorite Bill Schonely-ism is when he described a slam dunk as ‘climbing the Golden Staircase.’ The imagery he used and his energy were a big part of truly experiencing a Blazers game.”

The resolution will be heard by the City Council beginning at 9:45 AM on May 28.

SIRIUS Satellite Radio and NBA to Host Reunion of 1972-73 NBA Champion New York Knicks PDF Print E-mail
Written by Maury Brown
Saturday, 10 May 2008 05:01

SiriusSIRIUS Satellite Radio announced Friday that Senator Bill Bradley and NBA Hall-of-Famers Willis Reed and Earl "The Pearl" Monroe, all members of the 1972-73 NBA Champion New York Knicks, will reunite at the NBA Store in Manhattan for an exclusive interview on SIRIUS Satellite Radio on Tuesday, May 13, 2008.

Bradley, Reed and Monroe will sit down with Mike Yam and Mitch Lawrence, hosts of the daily NBA talk show Full Court Press, at the SIRIUS broadcast set on Center Court at the World Famous NBA Store on Fifth Avenue in New York City. The interview will air live nationwide starting at 1:00 pm ET exclusively on SIRIUS channel 127.

The former teammates will discuss the current NBA Playoffs while remembering their own journey to the 1973 NBA Championship. With Monroe and his dazzling ball-handling skills in the backcourt with Walt "Clyde" Frazier, the steady, intelligent play of Bradley at forward, and the captain, Reed, back at his familiar center spot after being plagued by injuries the previous season, the 1972-73 Knicks finished the regular season with a 57-25 record and captured their second NBA title by defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in five games. New York had the stingiest defense in the league that year, yielding only 98.2 points per game, and Bradley set a new team record for free throw percentage, which he would surpass in each of the next four seasons.

All three men were elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame after their playing careers ended and Reed and Monroe were named among the "50 Greatest Players in NBA History." Bradley went on to enjoy a successful second career in politics, representing the state of New Jersey in the U.S. Senate from 1979 to 1997. Bradley also hosts the weekly SIRIUS talk show American Voices, airing Sunday mornings exclusively on SIRIUS Stars, channel 102.
